Where Can One Find These Referee Clinics?

Customarily these are organized by the local association and/or club by the Referee Assignor or Co-ordinator. They must determine locally what type of clinic they want to hold, and at which point they would contact the State Director of Instruction or the local area Instructor Co-ordinator. The Instructor will want to know the following:

  1. The town in which the clinic is to be held.
  2. The facility for the clinic--will it accommodate the expected number of students?
  3. Who is the sponsoring Association?
  4. Who is their representative, and what are their address, telephone and E-mail?
  5. On what dates will the clinic be held?
  6. Is there a field available for the practicum?
  7. What instructional aids are available? This might include LCD projector, overhead projector, blackboard, VCR and TV, etc.
  8. How many people are expected to attend?
  9. How are they expected to register for the clinic?

The Instructor will advise that the cost to the Association will be as follows:

  1. Entry Level Clinic (Grade 8): $25.001 per head, with a minimum charge of $350.00
  2. Recreational Referee Clinic (Grade 9): $20.002 per head, with a minimum charge of $250.00
  3. Bridge Course (Grade 9 to 8): $20.001 per head, with a minimum charge of $250.00

It is possible that a particular association will charge an individual more than the stated amount to attend the clinic. It is also possible that a particular association will allow attendees who belong to their association to attend the clinic without charge (with the expectation that they will officiate a specific number of games for the association).

When the facts about the clinic have been determined, the relevant basic information is posted onto the State Referee Committee website wasrc.org by the local area instructor co-ordinator and/or the SDI. WSYSA and WSSA link to this site for information about clinics. We try to do this forty-five days before the start of the clinic so that the clinic can be properly advertised. In every case, the more lead time the better. Local advertising is also very important.

An association representative should be assigned to attend any clinic to handle attendance, money, questions, room arrangements, etc., and to take the names of attendees for the association's use. This representative might also check with the Instructor contact prior to the commencement of the clinic to ensure that instructors have been assigned.
